Description

Onion Browser is the original free and open-source Tor-powered web browser for iOS. Onion Browser helps you access the internet with more safety and privacy, and no extra cost to you.

“The best Tor-related offering on iOS right now is Onion Browser” - The Daily Dot, October 14, 2015.

Featured in: The New York Times, The Guardian, Salon, TechCrunch, Gizmodo, Boing Boing, Lifehacker, Macworld, The Daily Dot, & others.

FEATURES:
• Browse the internet over Tor:
- Protect your privacy from website tracking
- Secure your traffic from insecure wireless networks and ISPs
- Support for HTTPS Everywhere, an automatic switch to HTTPS enabled websites
- Access .onion sites that are only accessible over Tor.

• Fight online tracking: block scripts and automatically clear cookies and tabs, based on your preferences.

• And more privacy-enhancing features!

DISCLAIMERS:
- Web browsing is much slower than through a normal web browser or a VPN because your traffic is encrypted and relayed through the Tor network.

- Multimedia often bypass Tor and compromise your privacy; video files and video streams are blocked by default and are not supported by Onion Browser.

- Onion Browser might not work on networks with advanced network restrictions. If the app does not connect, try using bridges (or a different type of bridge), force-quit, and then restart the app.

- Use of Onion Browser is at your own risk; remember that sensitive data does not always belong on a mobile device.

** Onion Browser is free and open-source software. You can read more about Onion Browser and how to support development of Tor on iOS by visiting onionbrowser.com **

* Fixed major issue on iPads where "Browser Settings" button did not open the settings screen.

* Onion Browser now supports the full, native of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus devices, instead of stretching.

* User-Agent spoofing updated to pose as more recent versions of iOS and Mac OS X.

* "Screen blanking" when leaving Onion Browser has been improved, no longer rendering a large black rectangle.

* Reduced app download size by 20%.

* Updated Tor to 0.2.5.8-rc, improving connection stability and overall security. Access to Tor hidden services should be improved. See onionbrowser.com for links to more details.
What's New in Version 1.5.5
A brand new Onion Browser is coming this Autumn -- with tabbed browsing and many other requested features! Until then, more minor improvements to the current version:

* Minor update to improve support on iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

* COMPATIBILITY NOTE: iOS 6.1 or greater is now required; Onion Browser formerly worked on iOS 6.0 devices. iOS 6.1 support will be dropped later this year to improve overall security in the app.
What's New in Version 1.5.4
A brand new Onion Browser is coming this Autumn -- with tabbed browsing and more security features! Until then, more minor updates to keep you safe:

* Tor updated to 0.2.4.23, containing several security fixes, incl some mitigation of the well-publicized RELAY_EARLY traffic confirmation attack.

* OpenSSL updated to 1.0.1i, with some security fixes (mostly affecting ways to crash apps which use OpenSSL).

The latest information on security and app updates can always be found at onionbrowser.com
What's New in Version 1.5.3

What's New in Version 1.5.2
Fix issue where app would sometimes disappear from home screen. See onionbrowser.com/help/ if you are still affected.

What's New in Version 1.5.1
User-agent spoofing has been updated new "normalized iPhone" and "normalized iPad" settings hide your exact device and iOS version.

User-agent Spoofing & Active Content Blocking now attempt to protect you within scripts.

Greatly improved pageload speed and reduced bandwidth use within the app. (Due to an error, the app previously did not use "gzip encoding" when communicating with websites.)

Fixed issue where browser overlapped toolbar on iPad.

Tor updated to 0.2.4.22, which contains further Heartbleed mitigation and encryption improvements.
What's New in Version 1.5.0
This is a MAJOR security update to Onion Browser; a security audit of the app was performed thanks to the Open Technology Fund and Cure53. This update fixes several vulnerabilities identified:

* Third-Party Cookie blocking was not working as expected.

* Several ways for attackers to cause the app to unexpectedly quit or load insecure content have been patched.

* Browser caches and HTML5 databases have been disabled due to their ability to bypass cookie blocking.

* File encryption (for settings/bookmarks/caches) was not working as expected and has been overhauled; all app data is now encrypted when the device is locked with a passcode.

* The home page has been updated to an Onion Browser-specific page to check for Tor connectivity.

* More minor fixes: see onionbrowser.com for more details on this update.
What's New in Version 1.4.1
OpenSSL updated to 1.0.1g, fixing the Heartbleed bug.

Tor updated to 0.2.4.21.

Onion Browser now encrypts locally-stored data, including browser settings, bookmarks, and Tor bridges (if enabled), providing a slight security improvement if an attacker has physical access to the device. As long as the device is locked with a passcode and the app is inactive, data is encrypted by the operating system.

Fix issue where Onion Browser was not allowing third-party apps to open using custom URI schemes.

Fixes issues with certain websites (particularly ones using frames) and "active content blocking" being too aggressive.
What's New in Version 1.4
App is now being compiled with 64-bit CPU optimization (for iPhone 5S and new iPads), which may improve performance. App continues to work on all other devices running iOS 6.0+.

A progress bar / loading bar, similar to one used in Safari, has been added to the app. Based on work by Satoshi Asano.

A copy of the help site has been embedded into the app, for offline viewing and a more prominent link has been added to the main menu.

Fix awkward navbar / address bar spacing in iOS 7.

NOTE: Because of CPU optimization compatibility, Onion Browser now requires iOS 6.0 or greater.
Note: The release notes shown here are grabbed from time to time from the iTunes servers, so maybe there's some missing versions.
