What's New in Version 6.9.1

We just added a Tumblr extension to iMessage. It lets you make a GIF, then text that GIF to anyone you want.

You can make GIFs out of videos, bursts, or Live Photos—or you can shoot fresh GIFs straight from your camera. It’s a pretty capable little extension.

If you don’t already see it in iMessage, here’s how you turn it on:

· Open your “Messages” app.
· Open a conversation, if one isn’t already open.
· Tap the app store icon next to the message field.
· Tap the + icon.
· Take a snack break. Maybe some almonds or a yogurt.
· Tap the “Manage” tab.
· Tap the switch next to “Tumblr.”

You are done.

Whew.

What else can you do with this marvelous extension?

· Make your GIF faster or slower.
· Make it loop or bounce or run backwards.
· Write on your GIF. Choose from 3 different fonts, all of them equally valid.
What's New in Version 6.8

What's New in Version 6.0
Please welcome…GIF post!

GIF post is round, yellow, and sparkles with new possibilities. When it's not in the post flower hanging out with its friends you can probably find it spinning videos and bursts into GIFs.

But wait, there's more! Just in time for summer: Now you can add text to your GIFs. With three fun and sporty fonts, and a rainbow of color options, you're guaranteed to find something for every GIF.

**If your apps aren't opening: It's most likely because of a bug in iOS 9+. It prevents some apps from opening when you're low on memory—usually right after an app updates. Apple suggests restarting your phone, which seems to work for us.

What's New in Version 5.8
Version 5.8 is what we’re calling this one. Here’s the newest thing:

Now messaging windows gently suggest some things to talk about with Tumblrs you're about to message for the first time. In case you panic under pressure and forget everything.

If you need some more things to talk about, even in your daily life, here are some things:

• Frosted animal crackers: any good?
• What is the name “Kirk” short for?
• How heavy is a tank, do you think?
• How heavy is two tanks?
What's New in Version 5.7
5.7 is a slice of heaven that lets you send inbox spammers to hell. Just tap the "Mark as spam" link at the bottom of any message from a spammer. This will send the spammer to hell.

Also, in this release, we sent a lot of bugs to hell. Their cries are haunting. We also made some under-the-hood improvements that have nothing to do with heaven or hell, but instead serve as a source of material enlightenment.

What's New in Version 5.6
This is a fun and cool release. Includes:
• Bug fixes

~~~VISION~~~
Now any video (or burst!) on your iOS device can be GIFFed, edited, and posted using the Tumblr app.
Here’s how:
1. Open a new photo post.
2. Pick a video (or a burst!).
3. Poof. Now, it’s a GIF.
You can crop it. Trim it. Make it fast. Make it slow. Make it loop. Make it rebound back and forth. Make a whole bunch and arrange them into a photoset. Search for “made with tumblr” if you want to see what other people are doing with this thing. Go forth and GIF.
And now, a few exciting tips:
TIP: Don’t underestimate bursts(!)—they produce extremely handsome GIFs.
TIP: The shorter your GIF is, the better it’ll look.
TIP: The rebound button is rad. Try it out and enjoy the resultant smoothness.
TIP: Speaking of smoothness, 1.5x is a really smooth speed.
TIP: GIF a slow-mo video, then speed it up in the GIF maker. An incredible, pudding-like smoothness.
TIP: Too much face for one selfie? Make a photoset.
~~~SOUND~~~

You can post your favorite songs (or least favorite! up to you!) right from the Tumblr iOS and Android apps. They don't even need to be on your device, they just need to be on Spotify or SoundCloud (which they probably are).

~~~AND DON’T FORGET~~~
Messaging. Real, instant, threaded messaging is rolling out to every user.
If you see a smiley balloon on your screen, you’ve got messaging. If you message someone, they’ll get messaging. Eventually, messaging will cover the earth.
Aaaaand we'd love to hear any feedback or questions you have about this thing. What works well? What kinda doesn't? What features do you want to see? After you talk to a Tumblr, talk to us: tumblr.com/support.
What's New in Version 4.9
4.9 features massive advances in sound and vision.
What's New in Version 4.8
Now you can follow a search, just like a blog.
"Hmm?"
Well, for example, what're you into?
"Potatoes."
Very cool, okay. So if you search for "potato," then tap "Follow" in the search field, we'll periodically slip the best new potato posts right into your dash. Not too many! Just enough to keep you abreast of the potato scene on Tumblr.
What's New in Version 4.7
So, uh, now when you go to make a photo post, the screen where you pick a photo looks a little different. If you have a lot of photo albums, it’s easier to switch between them. That’s not such a big deal.
The reason it looks different, though, is that an actually big deal is coming in the next release or two and we had to change the photo-picking screen to accommodate it.
To be cont’d.
What's New in Version 4.6
Lots of awesome bugs are gone.
What's New in Version 4.4
Huge thing: Reblogs you can read.
Whisper goodbye to the indecipherable ziggurat of blockquotes that made long reblog chains impossible to follow. Say hello to a clean, simple stack of commentary.
This has been a long time coming. Enjoy.
What's New in Version 4.3.1
“4.3?” roared David Karp across the boardroom table. He spun on his heels, turning his back to the board. His shoulder muscles rippled through his gingham shirt.
“4.3? We can do better than that. We HAVE to do better than that.”
The boardroom broke into murmurs. They had done everything right with 4.3. The entire company, top to bottom, had signed off on it. The research was there. It was focus-grouped for ten months straight. It was a sure-fire hit.
An executive VP piped up. “But, David, 4.3 is the most market-tested product we’ve ever released! The approval numbers are off the charts!”
David’s hand came smashing down on the luxurious mahogany slab. Glasses rattled. A ballpoint pen was sent flying. “I don’t give a darn about the numbers! What happened to doing something because you gave a flying flip about it? What happened to the passion? Numbers? The others guys can have numbers. We’ve gotta have passion, or we’re not worth the CD-ROMs we’re printed on. Passion. That’s what it’s all about. That’s why we’re all here.” David gestured behind him, toward the plate-glass window, the Manhattan skyline sparkling beyond. “We do it for them. For the common man. The common man needs Tumblr now more than ever.”
He spun again, now facing outward onto the city he loved. From every street rose a memory. Lexington Avenue, where he learned to ride a bike, and where he got his first broken arm (Maury, who owned the bagel store, came running out when it happened. Good old Maury). Bleecker Street, where he got his first kiss, and saw his first real rock ’n roll show. The Velvet Underground. A sound so raw and real it could only come out of NYC. Finally, he looked down directly onto the street below. The street on which he’d built his business…no, not his business—his dreams. Below was a street on which the creative passions of millions of users had stacked up into a four-hundred-thirty-one-story skyscraper that housed the collective energy of Tumblr.
David Karp pressed his nose against the glass and looked deep down into the canyon of 431st Street. Four-three-one. That’s when it hit him.
“Four-three-one. That’s it. Version 4.3.1. That’s what we’ve gotta do. Version 4.3.1 of the Tumblr app for iOS.”
Silence fell over the board room. The air around the one-of-a-kind, designer table was thick with uncertainty.
Then came the sound, ringing out like a shot. It was a handclap. The executive VP has risen to his feet. Another handclap erupted from his palms. His muscular, deliberate applause electrified the room.
The next thing David knew, the entire board was on its feet. Clapping, stomping, hollering. The sound was thunderous, deafening. This was it. This was why he had followed his dream in the first place. This...
This was 4.3.1.
What's New in Version 4.2
This release is more cosmopolitan and less crashy. How so?
• We added Chinese translations
• We reduced the number of crashes
What's New in Version 4.1
• Real blocking of real jerkwads. Really! Block someone and they won't be able to follow you, message you, or interact with your posts. They won't even see you in search results. Good riddance.
• Share blogs with whoever might be interested in those blogs. Friends, followers, countrymen. Lend them your blogs.
• A thinner sidebar for iPads in landscape mode, for a more relaxed fit where you need it most.
What's New in Version 4.0.2
New thing about 4.0.2: The number-one cause of crashes has been eradicated. Thanks for the feedback, everyone.
New things about 4.0: Oh, lots. Almost too many to list. But here goes:
â—† Create new blogs from inside the app
Ever get an idea for a blog while you’re out on the town, or up in an aeroplane? Make it, name it, give it an avatar, give it a header image, title it, describe it, post your first post to it-all before you even return to the Earth.
â—† Make video posts using a video’s URL
Copy a URL from YouTube or Vimeo or another such site, slap it into the app, and you got yourself a video post. This is apparently your most-requested feature for the mobile app. Smart. We love it. Here you go.
â—† Submit to blogs that accept submissions
Situation: You’re deep-sea diving with your waterproof phone, snapping pics of fish and treasure chests and the sea god Neptune. Stuff that’s perfect for that submission-based SCUBA blog you follow. Now you can submit a post to it right from the briny deep.
â—† A widget for your widget collection
Witness today’s trending tags without even opening the app. Install it thusly: 1. From anywhere in your phone, swipe down from the top of your screen to open up your “Today” view. This is where all your widgets live. 2. Flick your way to the bottom, then tap the “Edit” button. 3. Find “Trending on Tumblr” in the list. There ya go.
â—† Filter searches by post type
Just looking for photos? We’ll just show you photos. Just looking for chats? Sure. You can do that, too.
â—† A heap of other niceties
• New icon. Feels good under your finger.
• Sticky search bar. Convenient for those heavy search sessions.
• Sticky avatars on iPad. Always, always know who made the post you’re currently reading. Never forget.
• Clean, fresh look for the iPad.
• GIFs load in a much more pleasing fashion. You’ll see.
• You can delete blogs from the app, which sounds like something only a troublemaker would need to do, but okay.
What's New in Version 4.0.1
Quick little bug fix.
Big new version number: 4.0
Big new features in it: Oh, lots. Almost too many to list. But here goes:
What's New in Version 3.8.3
One addition, one bug fix.
• Posts that link to Etsy, Kickstarter, and DoSomething now have buttons that let you buy, kick, or do.
• This thing was happening where posts would randomly disappear, leaving vast fields of blue in their wake. Pretty as that was, we decided to fix it.
â“£
What's New in Version 3.8.2
3.8 was a great release and this one is 0.0.2 better, in terms of having fewer bugs and crashes.
What was so great about 3.8?
• Notifications: Now for asks, answers, and fan mail. Yes, finally.
• Lock Screen: Swipe your notifications to like posts or follow people.
• Passwords: Greatly improved integration with 1Password and Authy, for those who bother to log out.
• Accessibility: Tumblr was already for everyone but now it is even more so.
• Storage: App taking up too much space? Smash the cache. Just feel like smashing something? The cache is a relatively harmless thing to smash.
• Loveliness: Some subtle tailoring, for the connoisseur.
â“£
What's New in Version 3.7.5
All we did in this one is fix a few of the most common causes of crashes. Cheers to a stable holiday.
â“£
What's New in Version 3.7.3
This is a small and gentle release.
• Videos indicate how much they’ve loaded, which is neat. And they play a little better once they do.
That’s about it. See you next time.
â“£
What's New in Version 3.7.2
Not a big update. You know, bug fixes.
Main one was an annoying thing with iCloud keychains where you couldn’t be logged in on more than one device at a time. Annoying! We fixed it.
Okay, bye!
What's New in Version 3.7.1
